An intensive summer program for future filmmakers
The Advanced Filmmakers Academy (formerly known as the Digital Cinema Academy) is an intensive summer program for high school students interested in studying and creating films.
Spend a week using industry-standard production techniques and equipment, and learning the full process of filmmaking from industry leaders. Take in lectures on cinematic production from some of the most successful names in Hollywood, including prominent executive producers, Emmy Award-winning directors and other professionals who have crewed big-name television and film titles.
The five-day program will introduce you to all the different phases of filmmaking, from pre-production to post-production. You’ll collaborate with fellow high school filmmakers to produce a short film in just one week.
Also--New this year! Are you more interested in being in front of the camera than behind the camera? Or maybe you want to be the next big director, but you have a friend who is an aspiring actor? Check out our new collaborative session, Acting for the Camera: Presented by Midsummer Theatre Camp. It takes place the same week, in conjunction with our Advanced Filmmakers Academy and gives high school acting students the chance to learn from IU Theatre faculty about acting for film and TV. After some preliminary workshops, the students will get the chance to act as the talent in the short films produced by the Advanced Filmmaking Academy's production students!
How to Apply
Admittance to this session is by application only. Follow the steps below to apply. We will be notifiying students on a rolling basis if they are accepted or not. You will hear back no later than April 28th, 2025.
- Fill out the application to the Advanced Filmmakers Academy.
- As you fill it out, think about all relevant experience that you have in any aspect of filmmaking. Don't leave anything out!
- Feel free to post any work on the application that showcases your experience. You can do this by inserting YouTube/Vimeo links (feel free to make the videos Unlisted if you don't want them publicly viewable, but don't set them to Private or we will have issues viewing them), or you can insert a link to a cloud service folder where the work is (Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud etc).
Description of the video:
Michael Uslan, IU alum and executive producer of the Batman movie franchise, sits in the Ken and Audrey Beckley Studio in Franklin Hall.
Hi, I'm Michael Uslan, the originator and executive producer of the Batman movie franchise from "Batman 1989" to the "Joker" and to our upcoming "The Batman."
I'm here at Indiana University to just give a shoutout to IU Cinema Academy. This is of great precollege program that gives you an opportunity to have hands-on experience in the whole field of moviemaking: the technical, the aesthetic. It's a golden opportunity.
It also gives you a chance to network. Networking is something you're going to have to learn how to do if you want to get that job in Hollywood or New York or Chicago when you get out of school and build a career for yourself in this insane, crazy, wonderful industry.
So go online, check out IU Cinema Academy, and I will see you all there, either in person or by the magic of technology.
